SPLICE Fall 2007 Overload!!! @ Monkeytown

It's time for the SPLICE Fall 2007 Overload!!! Join us on Sunday, September 30, as we bring four of our favorite eclectic electronic acts to Monkeytown, Brooklyn's hottest multimedia venue.

LIVE:

» 8:00 pm: Radio Wonderland
» 9:00 pm: I, Synthesist
» 10:00 pm: Elijah B Torn
» 11:00 pm: The Flight Orchestra

DJ:

» Maxx Klaxon (Popular Front Records)

ARTIST BIOS:

RADIO WONDERLAND is Joshua Fried, turning live radio into recombinant funk. With a boombox, a laptop, four shoes, two drumsticks, a steering wheel, and a MIDI controller, he plucks sounds from the airwaves and spins them into wild electronic collages. Totally improvised every time, and unlike anything else you've seen or heard!

I, SYNTHESIST, aka Chris Ianuzzi, uses classic analog synthesizers as well as cutting-edge digital technologies and tools to create and perform expressionist electropop. The complexity of his arrangments reveal his sophistication as a composer; his infinitely mixable beats, memory-sticking melodies and energetic vocals make the mind race with possibility.

ELIJAH B TORN is not the kind of musician who claims to be from outer space: it is clear he comes from a backwoods swamp. He spends his idle time honing his evil powers of noise manipulation with a unique blend of organic and electronic music which he has been creating for over fifteen years. This forms the groundwork for his unique live performances.

THE FLIGHT ORCHESTRA is a left-coast-based idealist, voice-ist, alchemist, producer, dataage facilitator, remix-ist, collaborator, conspirator, performor, misspellor, lovrrr, + fighter. In most circles FLIGHT ORCHESTRA since 2002 has been known as Wilson, David N.

CAN I GET AN AMEN?
 »General

Prohibited Beatz, a documentary by Julie Covello available in five parts on YouTube, chronicles the band Nerve, an ensemble of jazz musicians formed to play live drum and bass.

Even if you don't watch the whole thing, check out the fantastic opening sequence: it illustrates how the "amen break" -- a brief drum sample from a 1969 soul record -- became the rhythmic foundation of entire genres of electronic and street music.

DOWN THE SYNCHOLE
 »Tech

Last month I replaced my old and busted cell phone with a
Samsung Sync. Since then, I've become just a tad bit obsessed.

The 2-megapixel camera is nice, but I use it less than I thought I would. Instead I spend a lot of time fiddling with the music player -- building playlists, filling up my 2GB memory card with tunes, and figuring out how to work around the limitations of Samsung's awkward player software.

And the phone works well as a phone, but I actually use it more for written than spoken communication. I'm texting more than ever, and enjoying the ability to read and send Gmail on the go. I hope to get Gcalsync working soon, so that I can sync my Google Calendar with the phone. Yes, Google has me by the short hairs.

I've even discovered how to get into the "test menus" and hack the settings that only technicians are supposed to mess with. So far this has mostly been about customizing the volume levels of music playback. But there are many other things I want to try -- like nixing the camera's fake shutter noise, and deleting some of the "un-deletable" games, wallpapers, browser favorites, and other annoying cruft that comes pre-loaded on the Sync.

I'm learning how to do most of this via TheSyncHole.com, a forum devoted entirely to this phone. I knew that mobile devices had spawned a large online subculture; I didn't realize how passionate and otaku-like people could get about particular models. (Let's not even talk about the iPhone, which has barely left Maud's hands since she got it.)

But my favorite phone hack so far has been a fairly simple one -- installing my own ringtone:

P.S. If I start blogging from the phone, somebody shoot me. If I refer to it as "moblogging", please shoot me twice.

A ROUND OF APPLAUSE...

...for Marlene Mars, the the Maxx Klaxon Outreach Unit's director of psychological operations, backing vocals, and bass grooves for these past couple of years. Here she is, ready for action at the Knitting Factory, just over a week ago:

Marlene Mars

Ms. Mars is currently embarking on an extended deployment across other sectors of the NYC musical universe (where she will soon emerge as a force to be reckoned with). But the world hasn't seen, or heard, the last of her contributions to the Klaxon revolution! Stay tuned.
